Hello fellow library media colleagues!

Even though my district does not formally assess elementary library media classes, I decided a to develop a “library media report card” for my students to include with their other “official” report cards. The other specials classes (music, art, P.E.) assess their students once each semester, so I followed their lead.

I have included 12 different report cards/assessments: 2 for each grade in K-5 (1st and 2nd semester). I don’t assign letter grades, but have “meets” “exceeds” or “working towards” grade level expectations. You can see in the preview that there are three major areas of assessment: 1. “Demonstrates the ability to use the Library Media Center”, 2. “Information Literacy” and 3. “Digital Citizenship/Technology”. The format of the report cards are the same for all grade levels, but with different areas of assessment based on the grade/semester. You simply click on the area where you choose what grade level expectation you want them to have and a pull-down menu appears for you to pick which one. You can also click on the “Comments” area and a pull-down menu of pre-selected comments appears for you to choose. You can click again in the line below and choose another comment, or you can just type your own comments in if you wish.

I made an Excel spreadsheet that includes the teachers’ last names, and student first and last names for the entire school. I then do a “Mail Merge” to insert each student’s name into the class set of assessments. I have included a page in the zip file that gives you an EXAMPLE of what it looks like.

These files are EDITABLE so you can customize them to suit your needs! Add or delete what you feel is/is not important to teach at each grade level. You could also use these as a curriculum guideline if you don’t want to use them as assessments.

IMPORTANT: Please note that these assessments were updated using Microsoft Word 2013. If you are using Word 2003 or older, you will still be able to see the documents, but you will NOT be able to utilize the pull-down menus on the documents. Newer versions of Word (2007, 2010, 2013, 2016) will work.

I understand that assessing students in library media class is debated quite a bit in our professional field, but I can’t tell you how many parents and classroom teachers I’ve had that have expressed their appreciation for these assessments! Even though I send home numerous letters, updates and emails throughout the school year letting everyone know what’s we’re doing during library media classes, I still have parents comment to me after receiving their child’s library media class assessment, “Wow! I had no idea you were teaching all of this!” I believe it’s great P.R. for elementary media specialists, especially during these budget-conscious times.

The file is in a zip format, so you must have an unzip program to open it.

This is great organizational tool if you are evaluated using this framework and the K-5 assessments/report cards would be great "evidence" in terms of assessment!
