Frequently Asked Questions:
Are the lessons scripted?
No. These are NOT scripted lesson plans.
Do I have to teach the lessons in order?
No. I’ve laid them out in a way that makes the most sense, and they often build upon each other, however, if you need to teach the lessons in a different order, you absolutely can.
What grade levels can use this resource?
Resources and pacing guides are included for grades K-3.
Do you give examples for how to teach phonics skills?
Yes. I share what works in my own classroom.
Are these lesson for whole group or small group?
The sound-spelling correspondence introduction and brainstorming take place whole group. Additional work can be done in small groups.
What happens if a student suggests a word that is the correct sound but doesn’t follow the spelling?
Students will say words all the time that don’t fir the spelling but the sound is the same, especially for sounds that can be spelled multiple ways. I’ll say something like, “Oh remember we haven’t learned that spelling yet, but it’s spelled __.” If we’ve already learned the sound, I’ll have students turn back to that page in their notebooks and take a look. For words that don’t follow the alphabetic principle, I’ll say something like “that was (or will be) a memory word because it doesn’t follow the rules.”
Do you provide a scope and sequence for each grade level?
Yes. Pacing guides for K, 1, 2, and 3 are included. Each pacing guide is 32 weeks.
