Description

The Juvenile Justice Research Project: Teens Serving Time is a perfect way to implement a high-interest research project into your classroom! Students will research real examples of teens serving time, examine the juvenile justice system, prison reform, learn about the school-to-prison pipeline, and the impact incarceration has on a young person's life.

Research forms are included that can be used for any research task, including digital note-taking templates, research questions, paraphrasing and summarizing notes reference sheet, source citation sheets, and MLA source documentation examples for websites and videos.

After conducting research, students will select one of two final research project options. Rubrics and materials for both projects are included.

Can you edit student handouts and rubrics? YES! The teacher's guide provides access to all the Google Drive resource links. All student handouts, project sheets, and grading rubrics are editable to meet your needs.

High school English teachers can use this to supplement a thematic unit on choices and consequences, the Serial podcast, the award-winning Netflix documentary 13th, or to teach the research process to students while utilizing a high-interest topic.

This resource can also provide a short-term research project to supplement their study of the following novels: In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, Monster by Walter Dean Myers or Tangerine by Edward Bloor.

Social Studies teachers can implement this research project to supplement a study on juvenile crime, the impact of incarceration, or to analyze the topic of the school to prison pipelines.

From start to finish, this resource provides a high-interest research project with accessible digital resources and structured materials - no copies, no hassle, and no extra work for the teacher!

The activities and research project will take 5-6 days to implement. This resource is designed to use with grades 8th-12th.
