What educators are saying

As a Virginia teacher, Alyssa Teaches is my ultimate favorite seller on tpt. All of her resources are closely aligned to the Virginia standards.
This was an easy-to-use way to incorporate different perspectives into our Virginia Studies learning. I love the fact that the viewpoints presented are very different--it got students talking about how the same event can be seen from different perspectives.

Description

Looking for a way to teach students to consider different perspectives in order to understand history? This critical thinking activity is a great way for students to analyze primary source quotes in order to understand the changing relationship between the English settlers and the native peoples in Virginia.

Students will:

  • read background information
  • consider and compare needs, wants, and goals of the English settlers and native peoples
  • read, compare, and analyze quotes from Captain John Smith and Powhatan
  • synthesize learning to try to determine why their relationship changed over time

I recommend completing this as an enrichment/extension activity during your Jamestown or native peoples unit. The quotes are a little challenging; while this activity can work whole class, it will be even better with small groups of students. Students can discuss and record their thinking as they consider these two very different perspectives.

While this is a subjective activity, a sample answer key is included.

This resource supports Virginia Studies VS.1d, VS.2, and VS.3.
