Description

This January themed writing prompts resource includes 15 January themed prompts to get students thinking and writing about their knowledge of and experiences with topics related to the calendar month of January. There are 5 writing prompts for each of the following categories: opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.

We have also included mini versions of each writing prompt that can easily be pasted into an interactive notebook or writing journal and completed therein. Additionally, there is a cover page that can be colored by the students and stapled to their completed writing prompts.

Opinion Writing Prompts

  • Martin Luther King Day is observed on the third Monday in January. What did Dr. King do that you think is important?
  • What resolutions did you make for the new year? Do you think it is important to make resolutions?
  • The first iPhone was introduced in January of 2007. Do you think this technology has made the world better or worse? Why?
  • Trivia Day is January 4th. What are some bits of trivia information that you know and think others should know about?
  • Choose an animal that you associate with cold weather or cold climates. Write to tell why this animal is interesting to you.

Informative/Explanatory Writing Prompts

  • How does your family observe New Year’s Day? Describe your family’s traditions.
  • The first election for U.S. President was held in January, 1789. What do you know about the Presidential Office and its role in a balanced government?
  • Work Harder Day is January 12th. What have you thought about putting more time and effort into achieving?
  • January is Staying Healthy Month. Give advice and directions for living a healthy lifestyle.
  • The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924. Describe your favorite event. Do you participate in the same sport?

Narrative Writing Prompts

  • Secret Pal Day is January 10th. Think of your pal. Plan a day of surprises to please your friend.
  • National Dress Your Pet Day is January 14th. Tell about special outfits, collars, bows, etc. for pets that you know.
  • Make Your Dreams Come True Day is January 13th. Write to tell about a big dream that you have.
  • Have you been stuck inside somewhere due to the winter weather? Write about how you passed the time.
  • Suppose you were the only one who showed up for school one day. The door was open. How did you spend your day?
