Island of the Blue Dolphins Bundle (Comprehension Q's & Travel Brochure Project)

Comprehension Questions:

I have included the same questions in THREE different formats – task cards, question/answer, and in a list. This can be helpful year-to-year depending on your group of students. These questions are meant to be print and go, with little to no prep on your part! I have included 3-5 questions per chapter, depending on the chapter’s length. These questions are written in sequential order. Some questions build on each other, so it’s best to have your students respond to them in order. The answer key for each chapter’s questions is at the end of this packet for your convenience.

Comprehension Question Options:

Task Card Format – Each task card has the chapter at the top along with the question underneath. This is a great option to use for centers, scoot, or group activities. I have included a task card sheet for students to easily respond to the questions.

Question & Answer Format - This option is great to use for daily reading/writing classwork, homework, group assignments, or centers. I have included a cover in case you wish to make packets for your students. This option would also make great glue-ins for interactive reading notebooks. You would just need to print two to a page or reduce the percentage on your copy machine to make it fit notebooks.

List Format – This option is great if you need to cut down on paper. You can copy one page and cut it in thirds for your students to glue in notebooks or put it up on your document camera/smartboard for students to copy down.

Travel Brochure Project:

This project is a great culminating activity for students to complete after reading the novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. This project can be used for classwork, homework, a culmination assessment to your novel study, group assignment, or just for a fun reading activity! This is meant to be a print and go activity, with very little prep on your part required! I have even included a full color sample (page 6-7 of this PDF) for you to show your students as model of your expectations on this project. I love incorporating art with other academic areas and this project is a fun way to do so. For those of you doing common core, this project is also a great way to add some computer research into your novel study. I allow my students to either draw their brochure, print out things they need from the computer, or create the brochure entirely on the computer using a program. You can also opt to have students share their finished pieces in groups or whole class. My students love this project and it hits so many standards, while being a fun and exciting learning experience!

Students will create a tri-fold travel brochure using their knowledge of events in the book as a guide. It will be extremely helpful for your class to have access to the internet in order to see images of various plant and animal life mentioned in the book. Students will begin with designing a cover with their name, research plant and animal species, draw a map of the island, reasons to visit, and things to do while on the island.
