Description

Not sure where to start when teaching the linking verbs is and are in speech therapy? Knowing how to peel back the layers of this grammar and syntax skill can be tricky for those of us who use these words effortlessly! This scaffolded teaching guide will help you know exactly where to start and walk you through teaching this complex skill!

Are you teaching grammar with a strategy? Or are you just repeating sentences over and over hoping one day it will "stick"? By explicitly teaching the rules of grammar and syntax, your speech therapy students will understand why we use the words is and are and how to know which word to use!

This Resource Contains:

  • 11 Speech Room Activities to teach the foundational rules of the linking verbs is and are
  • 9 Homework Worksheets to encourage practice at home
  • 36 Flashcards in Color and B/W to give your students plenty of practice!
  • 1 Teaching Poster to use as a visual reminder and functional decor
  • Download the preview to see more!

How to Use This Resource

  • The slides and activities go in order following the strategy listed above
  • There are activities for you to do in speech and activities for you to send home for caregivers to practice the same skill at home. The homework activities were designed to be similar to the ones completed in class to promote understanding and repetition of target skills. Homework slides have “homework” in the corner.

The Strategy in This Resource:

  • Your student must understand the difference between “one” and “more than one”. This is the foundation for singular and plural.
  • It is helpful to teach your student the sight words “is” and “are” so that you can use these words as a visual cue later on. It is also great for early readers to be able to recognize these words.
  • Explain the rule: ”is” goes with groups of 1 and “are” goes with groups of 2 or more
  • Lots of opportunities for practice!
