Iron Jawed Angels Movie Guide (Women's Suffrage/19th Amendment)

This 2004 film is a great way to help students look at women's suffrage and their fight for the 19th Amendment. It follows the story of Alice Paul and Lucy Burns as they strive for democracy and equality during World War I. My students love this movie! The cast is excellent and is shares what people went through for change. August 2020 will mark the centennial of this amendment's passage.

The movie guide contains 40 questions to ensure students are tracking along with the film. I have also included the answer key for your convenience. I have also added five debrief questions as an additional assignment for after the film. There is not an answer key for it since the answers will vary. I use this film with my Freshmen Civics class during out Constitution Unit. This would also be a great resource in a Women's Studies course. I recommend using the edited version of this film online. It is easier that fast forwarding through scenes. However, I have included the times of scenes to skip if you use a DVD copy or if you stream the film.

Scenes to Skip

49:00-52:00 Alice's bath scene needs to be removed. I start fast forwarding after Alice stalls the car and start back when the senator's wife is in the bathroom bathing her kids.

1:20:30-1:21:15- I removed this scene as well. It is nudity in the prison scene. It is a back shot of women and you see their butts. I start fast forwarding when you see the blonde woman carrying a file and start it back when it cuts to the women putting on their gowns.
