Irena’s Children is a story of selflessness, perseverance, grit, and determination in the face of some of life’s fiercest obstacles. Irena Sendler, amidst the backdrop of the Second World War and the Holocaust, joins a movement that is bigger than herself. With help from friends, she joins a network of dozens of Polish citizens whose goal it is to smuggle as many children from the Jewish Quarter of Warsaw to safety. In total, more than 2,500 children are stealthily taken out of occupied Warsaw and hidden in orphanages and in the households of supporters of the cause. Along the way, Irena makes sure that her children's identities are kept safe, written down and hidden from sight in hopes of reuniting families after the war.
This young readers edition of Irena’s Children shares the true harrowing tale of what historians have named “the female Oskar Schindler”. Using ingenuity, bravery, and some nerves of steel, Irena Sendler helped sneak out children in toolboxes, ambulances, coffins, sewers and secret passages. Her network of underground resistance helped ferry these children to safe houses, under new names.
A little known story that is sure to inspire readers everywhere to stand up to injustice and advocate for those whose basic rights have been threatened or removed. Irena Sendler lived to the age of 98. Her grave is still visited in Poland by thousands each year including many of her “children”.
