The activity consists of:
Thirty (30) cards of ionic and covalent chemicals that contain errors in their names or formulas. For each card, students must:
-- Explain the error in the the written chemical
-- Write the CORRECT the chemical name
-- Write the CORRECT the chemical formula
This is a great way for students to completely practice all of the rules of nomenclature. The activity also allows teachers to assess their mastery of the subject-matter. If students can correct each card, they truly understand the rules of nomenclature. Transition metals (Roman numerals) and polyatomic ions are included in questions. The "flash card" format makes the activity more enjoyable for students. They can cut out the cards, or simply use the worksheets without cutting anything.
