Description

Teaching our students about stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination can seem challenging. This lesson is an easy way for teachers to introduce their students to difficult concepts. In this lesson students will examine common stereotypes from the media and society. They'll learn how to use the Cycle of Prejudice exercise to see how stereotypes can result in discrimination.


This lesson will take approximately 1h 15m or more to complete plus extension writing prompt

In this lesson students will ...

  • Watch a video (linked) and take notes in their worksheet about key concepts
  • Learn how to use the Cycle of Prejudice exercise to see the connection between and stereotype, prejudice and discrimination.
  • Brainstorm common stereotypes from media and culture that are associated with different groups of people.
  • Practice using the Cycle of Prejudice exercise with a number of different stereotypes
  • Complete the Circles of Ourselves activity to list different aspects of their identity
  • Reflect on the lesson: How have you experienced stereotypes or prejudice based on these aspects of your identity?
  • Complete an extension activity writing prompt about a related topic
