Introduction to Sets Day 1 Assessment on Sets Elements and Set Notation

This 10 question assessment will allow you to identify what your students do and do not know about sets, set notation, and set builder notation. Use this assessment as a quiz, a mini assessment, or a test to see if students can answer the essential question: What is a set and what is set builder notation?

The assessment is broken down into 4 learning targets so you and your students can know the purpose of why the questions are being asked and what you as the teacher will be looking for when you are grading. The included grading rubric is formulated for the 1 to 4 grading method seen most commonly in Standards Based Grading (SBG) but could be easily modified to other grading methods by assigning point values to each question or to each learning objective. The learning targets/objectives are as follows:

1. I can identify what a set is and give an example of a set.

2. I can identify elements contained and not contained in a set.

3. I can read a set written in set builder notation.

4. I can identify all elements given a set written in set builder notation.
