Intro to Colored Pencil Drawing Color Theory Middle School Art & High School Art

Start your students off with a strong foundation as they journey into the glorious and color-rich land of Colored Pencil. The possibilities with this drawing medium are endless! This presentation covers colored pencil basics along with the foundational principles of building rich chromatic hues and neutrals. It is sure to be a staple in your art curriculum for years to come.

The presentation and accompanying notes are designed for beginner artists but would also make a great refresher for your advanced students as well. Students take notes and then complete either a three or five part value scale/color labeling exercise (two separate worksheets included). I have also included a rubric for quick and easy grading.

If your students are learning remotely, these notes and the skill builder could easily be completed in a sketchbook or on loose drawing paper. The rubric is a separate document for easy grading.

I teach on a scaffolded model, beginning with the basic functionality of the medium, how to develop color and/or value using the medium, what to expect from the medium and how to get the most out of the medium.

My teaching sequence (no matter the medium) is as follows:

1. Notes & Skill Builder Value Scales
2. Sphere
3. Small Practice Drawing/Painting
4. Final Project

This presentation, notes and skill builder exercise is meant to be followed by the Colored Pencil Sphere Lesson found HERE and after that, students are ready for a variety of more complex subject matter, such as candy (lesson HERE) or the ever popular paint blob (lesson HERE).
