What educators are saying

I used this as a part of review for my class's cumulative mid-term on skin, bone, and muscles. It was very helpful and a great overview of what we had covered during the integumentary system unit.
Perfect for use in the classroom. It's informative, and requires some reading (but not so much they whine). I use it every semester.

Description

Do you teach the integumentary system to your high-school students? This 6-page activity is the PERFECT way to introduce the anatomy and physiology of the human integument to your anatomy, health, or biology students! No prior teaching required! Zero prep needed!

Page 1: Students will read a paragraph about the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, gleaning key details about each layer from the reading. After reading, students will apply what they read to a number of short answer questions. Lastly, they will color the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis on a cross-section diagram of the integument.

Page 2: Students will read a paragraph about the epidermis and its 5 layers (includes key details about each layer). After reading, students will apply what they read to a number of short answer questions. Lastly, they will color the stratum corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, and basale on a cross-section diagram of the epidermis.

Page 3-4: Students will investigate the dermal layers (papillary layer and reticular layer) through a series of short paragraphs. As they learn about the glands, sensory receptors, and more, they will color each structure on page 6 and read about that structure's function and important details.

Page 5: Review what you've learned! Students will complete a large fill-in-the-blank chart. Within this chart students will need to apply what they have learned to determine which part of the integument each statement is describing. Lastly, they will color-coordinate the chart to show which structures are part of the epidermis, papillary layer of the dermis, reticular layer of the dermis, and hypodermis.

Page 6: Color the integument (color-by-number)!

Parts of the integument covered: epidermis, dermis, hypodermis (subcutaneous layer), adipose tissue, stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale, papillary layer of the dermis, reticular layer of the dermis, dermal papillae, dermal ridges, capillary net, free nerve endings, Meissner's corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles, sudoriferous glands, sebaceous glands, hair follicle, arrector pili muscles

Included in this resource:

  • 6-page student packet (includes 4 pages of guided reading, 1 page coloring page, and 1 pages of conclusion questions to solidify learning)
  • Key to the packet
  • Digital version of the packet (through Google Slides™ with textboxes ready to type answers!)

This resource was designed to be broken up over the course of 3 days (so that your learners don't get fatigued!) and interwoven with my Integument Anatomy Doodle Notes. Check out my free Integumentary System Pacing Guide to see how I break it up!
