What educators are saying

This is a great activity to use in a mental wellness class, to teach kids about how peer pressure has an effect on their mental well-being.
My 9th graders started out thinking they were all to big to be affected by peer pressure, so letting them self direct the research into it made it a lot more effective.

Description

An Inquiry Based Learning Project your students are going to love!

PEER PRESSURE gets the blame for most, if not all, of our students' social and mental health issues: But how bad are the different apps actually? How beneficial are the benefits they bring? How are they shaping the young people who are increasingly logged in for longer and longer periods each year?

Our students should know the truth about the social media they're consuming and creating, but more importantly they should know how to answer questions about the different ways that they connect, as it's only a matter of time before the next 'new' thing shows up. In this project, students are given a general overview of how inquiry projects work, and are then set loose to dive into an authentic research process. At the end, they are given the option of presenting in one of four different modes: A presentation, a podcast, a documentary film, or an essay.

This Package Includes:

  • An Overview of Inquiry Based Research projects
  • An Introduction to Peer Pressure handout
  • The Assignment with Rubric
  • A Mini-Lesson and Video on Lateral Reading and conducting online research
  • 5 Pre-Selected Sources of reliable and vetted background information on peer pressure
  • Research Note Template Sheets for student research
  • A One-On-One Check in Meeting Prep sheet (to prep them to chat with you)
  • Suggested Teacher Check In Questions (for you to follow up with them)
  • A final product Planning Page for students to choose the best format for presenting their research
  • A research Presentation Outline activity

Hope you enjoy!
