What educators are saying

I laminated the colorful anchor charts and placed them on the side of file crates. Our class has been building our own structure/tower of text structures with these crates. My students have been popping up to the tower to use the posters as a resource.

-- 5 teaching posters / anchor charts
-- 10 "fill in the blank" task cards
-- 10 differentiated, multiple choice task cards
-- 1 recording sheet

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.5 Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.

This 4th grade standard requires the students to be able to describe the different types of text structures that they will be reading throughout the year. Since they will be reading multiple informational texts, it is helpful to introduce these structures to the students up front, so they can identify the structures, recognize signal words, and learn to read these types of texts throughout their 4th grade year. (Ohh.. and this helps prepare them for 5th grade when they are required to compare multiple structures).

Close reading stresses the importance of students being able to “think like an author”. Because of this, I also find it is important to ask questions from an author’s standpoint.

In this pack, you have 5 teaching posters with visuals and signal words to help the students understand each structure. I have included 10 task cards that targets these structures. (also 10 differentiated task cards) 5 of these will require students to identify the text structure used. The other 5 will require students to think about what the author’s goal/main idea, and how they should organize the writing. All questions are targeting text structure.

You can do these whole group or you can do them as a “scoot” game. The choice is yours! Please leave feedback, and let me know how you ended up using them!
