What educators are saying

This was a great way to teach students about how to make inferences. My students were engaged in and enjoyed all of the activities!
My scholars and I both loved this resource. I used this in a small group and my scholars really enjoyed the passages, and making the s'mores. I even allowed them to make s'mores at the end of the week (I used fluff). I will certainly use this again in the future!

Description

Are you looking for a fun inferencing activity? Here's a hands-on, creative way for your students to practice inferring as they read! It includes 6-7 short fiction reading passages. Each passage is followed by two questions that require the reader to infer in order to correctly answer the questions. This resource includes two formats: print and digital with TpT Easel.

This resource includes three formats to choose from: a traditional worksheet format, a craftivity format, and a digital format that is compatible with TPT Easel. Each is briefly described below.

FOUR TRADITIONAL WORKSHEETS:

Three worksheets contain two fiction passages, while the last worksheet contains just one reading passage. (In all his format features 7 passages.) Following each passage, students are asked two comprehension questions where an inference must be made in order to answer it correctly. Students write their answers in complete sentences. They also highlight text clues and explain background knowledge that helped them make the inference.

PRINTABLE CRAFTIVITY VERSION:

  • Begin by distributing the worksheet packet that consists of six short passages and twelve short-answer comprehension questions. After completing the worksheets, students transfer their answers to the craftivity and make s'mores. The finished products make a unique bulletin board or fun school hallway display! It can also be used as a novel entry in an interactive notebook!
  • This product includes a TEACHING POSTER! I made it to introduce the craftivity to my students. (However, I also found that it comes in handy to hang it in the hallway along with the finished products so that people passing by admiring the students' work will understand the connection between s'mores and making inferences!)
  • Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.)

TPT DIGITAL EASEL VERSION- This is a paperless version that can be completed on a device. It follows this pattern: a reading passage on the first slide, two slides with the comprehension questions, and a return to the reading passage to highlight text clues that the student used to make the inference. This pattern is followed six times for the six different passages. Students move marshmallow and chocolate images to assemble s'mores as they answer the questions. This format contains a multiple-choice format.
