Description
One of my favorite podcasts to listen to is about different parasites and pathogens that cause disease in the human body. In this research project, your high-school students will listen to one episode of the podcast (or just skip the podcast and research), answer research questions on that episode, and then create a presentation about that disease! The project typically takes my Anatomy & Physiology seniors one week to create and two to three days if we choose to watch all of the presentations together in class.
Included within this resource are:
- 3 pages of project instructions
- 1-page rubric
- 4-page research guide for students to answer questions
- 4-page digital version of the student research guide (to complete this project in a paperless way)
- Alternative, podcast-free version of the project
Here's the podcast that your students will be able to listen to! Please review the podcast prior to purchasing and make sure your students are of a maturity level that they can handle these topics. I avoided sexually transmitted diseases as a topic, but each podcast episode has varying levels of maturity requirements, as well as some political opinions and personal opinions from hosts. I highly recommend pre-listening to these podcasts and assume no responsibility over the content included within the podcast episodes. If you would prefer, you can skip the podcast and all information can be gathered via independent research on the internet.
Important information that students will learn about their pathogen/infectious disease:
- Name and identity
- Disease that it causes
- Symptoms of the disease
- Modes of transmission
- Hosts
- How it evades the immune system
- Firsthand account of a patient with this disease
- History of the pathogen
- Current treatments
- Current prevention strategies
- Current status in the world
- Interesting facts
This resource comes from my full Immune System Unit! It is also included in my Full-Year Anatomy & Physiology Curriculum.
