This Interactions of Indigenous Peoples and Europeans Bundle is intended for use with Google Slides/Classroom™️, and has been created to support the 2018 Ontario Social Studies Curriculum for Grade 5, Strand A (formerly known as "First Nations and Europeans"). This resource is perfect for distance learning and/or students on accommodated IEPs!

This unit allows students to learn about the relationships among Indigenous Peoples before the arrival of European settlers, as well as their interactions with European explorers, fur traders, and settlers.

Students will be engaged in:

✔mapping

✔learning about physical and written evidence

✔comparing and contrasting Indigenous groups pre-contact

✔identifying items from the environment used by Indigenous Peoples

✔designing wampum belts

✔choosing and completing a performance task

✔identifying primary and secondary sources

✔identifying causes & consequences of events

✔evaluating the motivations and challenges behind early explorations

✔considering the differing perspectives of Indigenous Peoples, European explorers, & missionaries

✔exploring the role that an artist can play in shaping our understanding of the time period
✔evaluating the problems facing New France, and offering solutions
✔making inferences from the Census of 1666
✔identifying the character traits necessary for successful settlers to New France
✔learning about social, political, economic and religious components of a society
✔assessing the positive and negative effects of the fur trade
✔using a graphic organizer to demonstrate the relationships between specific Indigenous groups, the French, and the English
✔exploring conflict and cooperation amongst fur trade participants

Also included are student-friendly resources on the residential school system and modern day issues related to this early time period.

BONUS: Also included is the PDF printable version of Part 5: The Great Fur Fair (which can be found inside the Part 4 folder). As this activity does not lend itself easily to distance learning, I have chosen to simply include the pdf version as a bonus at this time.

You will require:

If your school district does not allow resources to be added in this way, you can still purchase the resource, and then email me directly with your TPT name, date of purchase, order number, and email address. Once I have verified the purchase, I will send you copies of the resources directly (although it may take me a couple of days to do this).

I have left 95% of the texts in editable form for two reasons:

➀ to ensure that students are able to use Google Read & Write with the activities.

➁ to allow teachers to edit texts and tasks when they feel it suitable for their class or to address IEP accommodations for specific students.

How do I collect student work?

Your students will simply complete their own copies of the lessons, and turn it into your platform (ie. Google Classroom).
