This editable lesson is designed to introduce students to Indigenous People's Day and provide information about its history and ongoing adoption process in the United States. Students will also use a map database to learn of local Indigenous lands.
Lesson Organization:

- Information about the term "Indigenous" versus "Indian"
- Information about Columbus Day and colonization
- History on the name change from Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day
- Map of and information about U.S. cities and states that have adopted the holiday
- Map of Indigenous lands in the United States
- Exploration of Indigenous lands local to students
Vocabulary words are underlined and differentiated in pink boxes throughout the lesson. (Parts of speech are not included because I had my students practice identifying them based on the definition, but can be added if you wish.)
Vocabulary Words:
- Outdated
- Colonists
- Genocide
- Propose
- Debate
- Gradually

Ideas for extending the lesson: pause and reflect moments, what do you wonder/notice in the photos or maps?, written reflections, what I learned (post lesson), what I still wonder
