    Description

Introduce your students to India's spring festival of Holi, the Festival of Colors! Includes lessons and 2 very fun crafts that capture the essence of celebrating Holi!

In many parts of India, this is the second largest festival celebrated annually, behind only Diwali, India’s Festival of Lights.

This bundled product includes the following, all as Adobe files:

    1. Introduction Lesson - Background on this festival that originated in ancient India; with plenty of images
    2. Day 1 | Holika Dahan Lesson - Day 1 of the festival, tells the Hindu story of Prahlad; with illustrations
    3. Day 2 | Holi Lesson - Day 2 of the festival, features people throwing colored powders on one another; with plenty of images
    4. Craft 1 Instructions - Blow-painting with straws art project/craft (see below for description)
    5. Craft 2 Instructions - Sponge-painted photo and tissue paper collage/decoupage art project featuring traditional Indian attire (see below for description)

Note that the lessons provided in the two individual resources included in this bundle are identical to one another.

Lessons are embedded on each slide of an images file that is in a slideshow format; no printing out is necessary. Art project instructions include images of each step and materials to source.

Craft 1 Blow-painting thru straws art project/craft - Students color in provided figure templates with colored pencils, then blow paint through straws on to these to depict how they "celebrated" Holi.

Materials needed are one sheet of white card stock, straws cut in half, colored pencils, black PERMANENT marker (must use permanent because washable markers will bleed), and liquid watercolor paints in 4 colors (you may substitute with watered down craft acrylic paints if liquid watercolors not available). Requires very little in amount of liquid watercolors.

Craft 2 Hanging sponge-painted photo collage/decoupage art project featuring traditional Indian attire - Students add a photo of their face to a body template that features Indian attire, then fill in clothing in decoupage style with tissue paper and glue, then add patterns with PERMANENT marker (must use permanent because washable markers will bleed; black recommended), then sponge paint on various colors of paint as they "play" Holi. Cotton balls are used instead of sponges. String may be added to hang. Final figures are approx. 10 inches tall. This is likely a 2-day project as drying time is needed after decoupage of papers (drying time needed after beads applied also).

Materials needed are sheet of white card stock, photos of students from neck up (2" x 2" each, printed in black and white onto standard white copy paper), scissors, tissue paper in assorted colors (very little quantity needed), 5 jumbo pony beads, 8 inches of string, a piece of tape, craft acrylic paint in 4 colors plus gold (very little needed), and Mod Podge/Elmers liquid glue. You may add other fun embellishments, too, such as yarn, sequins, metallic or printed napkins, etc.

    TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

"In my nearly 30-year career in education, I have never seen children so engaged in their learning! International Travel Academy is truly a multi-disciplinary approach that enables children to explore the world in an unforgettable way. Students get a real sense of what it means to respect another country's heritage, beliefs and ways of living, thus making them more tolerant and internationally-minded. I highly recommend this program to educators and parents wishing to make learning come to life!"

    – A Former Assistant Superintendent at Atlanta Public Schools

“(The five-day program) has given our school the unique opportunity to provide students with incredible experiences that align so well with our IB focus. Each spring with family and community support, our school essentially is transformed into our country of study for one full week. Teachers are easily able to follow the daily curriculum and activities provided, and the students truly enjoy this special week of instruction. From the art projects to festive food tastings, cultural dress, music, dance and traditions, the students spend this entire week engaged in new and exciting experiences of a new country. I would encourage all schools (IB, or not) to jump in and make a week like this happen for their students. It is incredibly gratifying to spend this week with kids as they come together to learn and share experiences like these across grade levels, school-wide. When we hear such rich discussion in classrooms and read their detailed writing about what they've learned as part of (the) week, it makes all the preparation, planning and expense totally worth it!! “
