Description
Art history is a necessary part of any good Visual Art curriculum, but if you struggle to fit it in on a regular basis like me, then these famous artist biography activities are perfect for you! Use these to help students improve their independent research skills while also gaining valuable knowledge on a variety of artists, movements, and media. This is also a fun way to get students to put their art skills and techniques into practice, as they make their best attempt at recreating a piece from the chosen artists' body of work.
Grading your Famous Artist activity is also easy with this Google Sheets Rubric that can be used physically or digitally. Print it out on its own or on the back of the Famous Artist worksheet itself. Google Classroom users have the choice to either include a copy of the rubric along with the assignment (making sure to choose the option to make a copy for each student before assigning) or they could import the rubric directly into the new Classroom rubric feature making grading the easiest it's ever been!!
Need a different artist? Many more individual famous artist worksheets are available at the smART studio TpT store. You can also find more bundles like Impressionists, and Pop Artists, with more coming soon!
THE ACTIVITY EXPLAINED...
Whether you are face-to-face or virtual/eLearning, this activity will work for you as a printed sheet or an interactive PDF that is compatible with all PDF editing programs.
Section 1:
Date of Birth-Date of Death and
Place of Birth
Section 2:
Movement: Students will be able to learn a bit more about the art history timeline as they discover which movement, or movements, the famous artist was a part of.
Section 3:
3 Works by the Artist: You could require them to find the 3 most famous or just let them find any 3. Generally, they will Google and, by default, will come up with the 3 most famous anyway!
Section 4:
5 Facts About the Artist: This could be anything from the medium they were most famous for to who they were married to.
Section 5:
Place Image Here:
Face to Face version: I leave a stack of 4x6 index cards next to the handouts and each student is to recreate a work of their choice on this card. Once complete, the student uses a glue stick to attach their recreation to their worksheet. You could also cover the words from this space with a white text box prior to printing or cover the words up as you make copies. This would allow the students to make the recreation directly on the worksheet, however, if they mess up and want to restart, they would have to rewrite the information also. Index cards are also a heavier weight paper that will support wet, heavy applications of media better than copy paper.
Digital version: Students can draw their recreation on any piece of paper they have on them, followed by taking a photo of the recreation and saving it to their computer. The student can then use their PDF editing program of choice to add this image to worksheet.
Title of Work: This should be the title of the recreated piece.
This file contains 10 interactive PDFs that can be used for print, or as an eLearning or Virtual activity, as well as a rubric for grading.
