It includes a discussion of Commodore Matthew Perry and the Treaty of Kanagawa, the Meiji Restoration, Japan's drive to modernize and westernize through the practice of selective borrowing, and the results of a powerful new Japan. This is designed for middle school or high school students. The reading is visually appealing and broken into chunks. It can be used for classwork, homework, research or as a platform for projects.
