UNIT PLAN:
1. Motives for Imperialism Digital Notebook (approx. time needed: 60 minutes)
This digital notebook introduces students to imperialism and the motives behind it. After a brief introductory PowerPoint, students will analyze 6 slides to determine which motive is most directly depicted: economic, exploratory, political, ideological, or religious. They will examine pictures, political cartoons, illustrations, and a quote. At the end, they will answer the 2 reflective questions:
- Explain how 2 of the motives are related to each other.
- Which motive do you think was the most influential & why?
2. Imperialism in Africa Digital Notebook (approx. time needed: 2 hours)
This digital notebook allows students to explore 4 examples of imperialism in Africa. They will examine a political cartoon and compare that to King Leopold's claims of humanitarian goals in the Congo.
After a brief overview of the Berlin Conference, students will examine imperialism in the Congo, French colonies in West Africa, South Africa, and the Suez Canal in Egypt.
Students will analyze maps, watch short videos, answer true & false questions, write short reflections, and visit curated web resources.
Includes a 24 slide teacher PPT to guide students through the material.
3. Heart of Darkness (approx. time needed: 60 minutes)
This digital notebook will allow your World History students to investigate the main themes of the novel "The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad in an accessible way. This is not a novel study, but rather uses the video sparknotes and 2 excerpts to analyze perspectives on imperialism shown in Conrad's classic novel in about an hour.
Students will also listen to a 4 minute interview from NPR with Chinua Achebe about the novel. Finally, students will analyze 2 excerpts and then explain what they think the title really means.
4. India - Gallery Walk (approx. time needed: 60 minutes)
This digital Gallery Walk or Stations activity for World History guides students through the effects of Imperialism in India. This assignment can be done as a museum-style gallery walk in class or completed digitally. Each topic includes a 1 page reading and 2 pages of additional sources: images, charts, etc.
You can also print and put the sources in file folders. Laminating the handouts makes it easier to re-use (& to clean in the time of COVID)
Students will investigate...
- The British East India Company
- What made India the "Jewel in the Crown"
- The Sepoy Rebellion
- British Raj
- Final question: " Summarize the effects of Imperialism on Britain and on India"
5. Imperialism in China (approx. time needed: 60 minutes)
This digital notebook with primary source analysis guides your World History students through the effects of Imperialism in China, including the Opium Wars, the Open Door Policy, and the Boxer Rebellion. Students will watch introductory videos and then analyze images and written primary sources to ultimately answer the question:
Describe the foreign influence in China during the age of Imperialism. How did China respond to foreign influence?
6. Resistance to Imperialism Pear Deck (approx. time needed: 60 minutes)
This digital notebook with built in Pear Deck features will engage your World History students as they learn about different methods of resistance to imperialism. The people targeted by imperialism did not meekly give in to domination. They found various ways to resist and fight back. These methods of resistance could be direct or indirect.
Students will look at examples from Ethiopia's successful military resistance, analyze the poem "The Brown Man's Burden," learn about the Meiji period in Japan, and read about covert resistance to the French in Indochina.
7. One Pagers - overview, timeline & people (approx. time needed: 60 minutes) [bonus file → not in listed resources]
Using the template provided, students will summarize Imperialism in each region. This is an
excellent study guide or jigsaw activity
Countries: India, China, Japan, Egypt, South Africa, the Congo
8. Review PPT
19 slides of information to recap main concepts from the unit & facilitate discussion
ASSESSMENT:
