Description

Whether introducing or reviewing 7 equivalent fractions, this fun activity will help students understand how equivalent fractions can be represented using fraction circle models to represent the same part of a whole for 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, and 1/6 fractions.

This equivalent fraction activity includes:

  • Identifying equivalent fractions can be challenging for students of all ages and grade levels. To differentiate instruction, there are 16 task cards with fraction circle models and two difficulty levels. The fraction models are the same for each level.

  • In the first level of this activity, students look at a circle model of a fraction and select another circle model representing the equivalent fraction.

  • Students shade in the fraction circle model in the second level to make an equivalent fraction.

These 16low-prep, large equivalent fractions task cards are ideal for math centers, stations, reteaching in small groups, or even as a quick math exit ticket to assess students' understanding of equivalent fractions using models.

There are other ways to use these large and low prep task cards in the classroom, such as small group teaching, math centers or stations, or extra practice.

Digital Equivalent Fraction Activity

This equivalent fraction activity is a digital or paperless practice activity through TPT Easel, so you can easily assign it to your students via any online learning platform.

Your students can access both levels of the equivalent fraction task cards set in TPT Easel. They can use the pencil option to circle their answer in the multiple-choice format or use the fraction circle manipulative to represent equivalent fractions.

Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
