Description

Keep your students engaged as they practice identifying book genres. Five worksheets are at the core of this resource. You get to decide whether your students complete the worksheet version or the book display version. If you're short on time, the worksheet version is ideal. If you have a bit more time, your students will love creating their genre book display!

Here's what you'll find in this resource:

  • Worksheets 1-4: Students begin this activity by completing 4 worksheets. Students are given a book title and a back-of-the-book description. Students must use the clues within the summary and title to identify the book's genre.

  • Worksheet 5: Genre definitions are provided. Students must identify the genre and then list potential characters that they will find in a book of that genre. When complete, this worksheet can become a valuable reference tool!

  • Craftivity- Students color and cut out the 12 mini-books and fold them in half so that the title is on the front cover and the brief description is on the back cover. (These mini-books are the same as the ones listed on the worksheets.) Then, they use construction paper to form a "Genre Book Display". The twelve "books" are slid into the book display and labeled with the appropriate genre label. The finished products make a unique bulletin board or fun school hallway display!

Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.)

You can also integrate the skill of visualization or making predictions into this activity. After students have read the front cover title and back cover summary of each mini-book, you could have them open their book and draw a picture of what they think might appear in the book or write a few sentences about their predictions for this book.
