Resources Included with this Back-to-School Icebreaker Bundle:

These icebreaker games are designed to get your students speaking, listening, reading, and writing, making them the perfect icebreaker activities for middle school and high school English Language Arts!

Each game serves as an engaging back-to-school icebreaker, but can also be used all year to facilitate literacy and manage students in your classroom.

For more information about each individual game, see the descriptions below:

    1. Icebreaker Questions for High School Students - Ice breaker Activity for Teens

This icebreaker activity includes 30 icebreaker questions for high school students.  If you teach upper middle school, your students will also love these get-to-know-you question prompts!  There are two suggested icebreaker games included with this resource:

    a. "Speed-Meeting" - For this high-energy, fast-paced game, set up different stations around the room.  To determine how many stations you need, you will need to take account of how many students are participating and divide that number into two.  These stations can be set up in a circle, and each station will have one handout with icebreaker questions.  Each handout includes three questions, and you can allow 2-3 minutes for students to discuss the questions at each station.  Once the time is up, you can rotate the stations by instructing either the students within the inside or on the outside of the circle to all rotate in the same direction.

    * If you have more than 20 students, you can repeat the icebreaker questions at different stations.  The pairings will be different so it won't be completely repetitive.  You can also use the editable templates to create more icebreaker questions!

*For virtual learning, this resource can be used as a digital icebreaker by using breakout rooms in Zoom. Instead of pairs, group students in larger groups. You can make new groups at the start of each class and use this activity over the course of two weeks, assigning a new activity sheet each day.

    b. Attendance Roll-Call Prompts - Introduce these icebreaker questions at the start of each class. You can read one question per day, and instead of having students respond with "here," they can respond with their answer to the question.  This is a great icebreaker activity for English Language Learners as it encourages conversation in a low-risk environment!

These ice breaker questions are formatted to be printed as individual handouts or to be cut and laminated for use as a card deck!

Editable templates for these icebreaker questions have also been provided. For more community-building, you can brainstorm question prompts together as a class.

    2. Partner Pairing Cards for Groups - 50 Partner Matching Cards with Headband Template

You can use these matchmaker cards as a fun icebreaker game at the start of the school year. You can also use them to quickly and easily pair students for classroom activities and assignments.  For best results, cut out and laminate these matchmaker cards.  Once laminated, they can be continually used in your classroom!

    a. As a Back-to-School Icebreaker Game:

When used as an icebreaker game, this activity will utilize students’ inquiry-based learning skills and give them the opportunity to talk to their classmates.

Have each student build their own headband using the template provided.  Provide each student with an individual card to attach to their headband, and instruct them to not look at it. They will have to ask "yes" or "no" questions to their classmates to guess their identity, and then locate their perfect match!

Ex: "Are you a food item?" "Are you yellow?" "Are you cheese?"

    b. As Partner Pairing Cards for Groups:

The differentiated partner matching cards indicate the item's match in the bottom-right corner.  This set can be used if you wish to quickly and easily pair students for classroom activities.  The standard cards will have students guess their partner.  This set can be used if you wish to have students engage in a fun guessing game to determine their partner.

    3. "Snowball Writing" Prompts - Collaborative Writing Icebreaker

Tap into creative potential and inspire students in their narrative writing with words, sentence starters, and other interactive writing prompts; these activities are sure to overcome writer's block and get students writing!

This resource includes 50 engaging creative writing prompts that can be used with middle school and high school students.

Snowball writing is an icebreaker activity that promotes creativity, collaboration, and communication among students. Give each student a sheet of paper with one of the writing prompts provided.  This prompt can be used as a sentence starter for the student to continue by adding onto it with another sentence. Once written, students can crumple up their papers into "snowballs" and toss them around the room or simply pass the paper along to a partner.

Each student picks up a snowball or receives a paper and continues the story based on the sentence they find. This process repeats several times, with each student adding their contribution to the evolving narrative.

This collaborative writing process encourages active participation and develops communication skills, as students build upon each other's ideas. The activity concludes with a sharing session, where students unravel their snowballs and read the completed stories aloud.

These icebreaker games are also included in Mondays Made Easy's Back to School Bundle for Procedures and Routines.  This bundle includes classroom management tools and community-building activities to establish daily routines, classroom expectations, and a growth mindset for the new school year.
