What educators are saying

Such a beautiful way for students to look inward and define wo they are and allow them to share that with their classmates

Description

The "I am From" poem (or autobiographical/introduction poem) is not an entirely new concept, but this file contains the step-by-step process that scaffolds the writing process for even the most "resistant" poets in your class.

The packet contains a two-sided pre-writing worksheet, a rough draft template, directions for formatting the final draft, and a detailed grading rubric. The writing process could take anywhere from 2-5 days in class, depending on the age of the learners and the time designated, or it could be sent home as an independent assignment for highly motivated, advanced students.

As a side note, an autobiographical poem is great introduction to narrative writing and the perfect place to introduce many of the corresponding standards!

Looking for another engaging back-to-school activity? High School Reading Terms: Scavenger Hunt or Matching Game (w/ KEY!) gets the students out of their seats and thinking hard! This activity would be great for assessing your students' prior knowledge.
