What educators are saying

This unit is my absolute favorite! I am keeping my fingers crossed that a similar one will be created for "I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912." I felt like everything I could want to be covered was included and then some! You will NOT regret this purchase.
My son loved reading this story and actively participated in the review worksheets. Helped me see what he remembered and if he was actually able to read the book and comprehend what he was reading in detail. Great work! I love your lessons.

Description

This novel study was created for my 4th grade class, most of whom are low readers and need worksheets and questions that are not busy, less wordy, and have extra supports to find the answers in the text. I have been having trouble finding this and started creating my own resources to better meet the needs of my students.

It is a worksheet page for each chapter in the book. If your students can handle being given a packet, you could print it as an entire packet. I generally assign 1 chapter to read for homework a night and send one page to hold them accountable for reading.

Each chapter has a section with comprehension questions, and then other various activities covering many skills.

That’s 17 worksheets, plus an after-reading writing assignment, plus answer keys. (Entire resource: 36 pages)

Skills Covered:
Chapter 1: Characterization, Setting, Figurative language
Chapter 2: Characterization, Setting, Building Background Knowledge (the North Star article)
Chapter 3: Descriptive Language
Chapter 4: Vocabulary, Point of View
Chapter 5: Vocabulary, Building Background Knowledge (Why Skunks Spray article)
Chapter 6: Context Clues, Character Traits
Chapter 7: Synonyms, Map skills

Chapter 10: Label the soldier uniform with vocabulary words

Chapter 14: Building Background Knowledge (The Battle of Gettysburg article), Predicting
Chapter 15: Theme
Chapter 16 (page 1): Character changes, Compare & contrast
Chapter 16 (page 2): Story map

I hope that this resource helps some other class!

Sincerely, Mrs. Buckeye Nut
