Look no further - The "I Survived: [Natural Disaster]" Narrative Writing Unit based on the bestselling series by Lauren Tarshis allows your mid-elementary students to author their own versions of these hit books while also researching a natural disaster. The best part- it's low prep. Just copy and go!

Included in this file is:

1. Ideas for Group Roles to keep all learners engaged and accountable for work.

2. Ideas for Natural Disasters to be researched by your students.

3. 2 Notes sheets for researching extreme weather: 1 vocabulary page, and 1 general notes page.

4. 3 story planning pages: 1 Plot Map, 1 Storyboard, and 1 Story Elements page.

5. 8 manuscript pages labeled by page number (8 because there are 8 squares on the storyboard). A 9th manuscript page has been included as an overflow page for your eager writers.

6. 1 cover for the final copy complete with illustration box.

7. 1 reproducible page for the pages of final copy complete with illustration box.

A typical curriculum map is as follows:

Day 1 - Divide students into groups, allow them to choose a Natural Disaster to study, complete research pages (pages 1-4)

Day 2 - Begin and finish story planning documents (pages 5-7)

Day 3 - Begin drafting manuscript (pages 8-16)

Day 4 - Finish drafting manuscript pages and begin final draft (pages 18 and 19)

Day 5 - Work day to catch up missing students, push groups to up the quality of their products, etc.

Day 6 - Author's Fair. Share your stories with your class, show them to a buddy class, or record them on SeeSaw or similar app to share with families!

19 total pages are included in the downloadable file. Files can be uploaded to Google Classroom easily for your virtual learners or completed in KAMI or similar online learning format.
