What educators are saying

I used aspects of this resource for the purposes of teaching my ELA class about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Many of them knew very little about the Civil Rights Movement, and after discussing the background, reading a speech that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave was very engrossing for them.
What a wonderful product! I used this for two reasons: to introduce Black History Month activities and to teach my students how to close read. It was a really great resource and I look forward to using again next year!

Description

If you’re looking for a way to make your close reading sessions a bit more impactful, I’ve got just the thing! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech helped change the course, spread the message, and promote equality in America. This resource uses his iconic speech to encourage students to use context clues to discover new vocabulary, as well as to think deeply about the text by answering 10 close read, text-dependent questions.

This has been used by children as young as 4th-grade students, however, you will need to decide on whether or not your students are mature and ready for this speech (just a fair warning). Students in grades 5th-8th grades will definitely benefit from this deep reading of the speech, as common core suggests that students read complex text, especially those that are historically based.

"I Have a Dream" Close Read - Dr Martin Luther King Jr | MLK Jr Reading Activity Includes:

  • Excerpts from the "I Have a Dream" speech (the entire speech is NOT included in this packet)
  • 10 close reading comprehension questions
  • Context clues activity

This also includes an answer key, but please know this is just one answer. Your students may come up with other acceptable answers to these questions, as they are text-based, but also, open-ended!

⭐ Such a great product!! I love that it is the full text of his speech (not just the better known excepts). Reading original documents (or speeches) is such a great skill. I linked a video of the speech to our Google classroom and we watched/listened as we did our first read. Thanks for such a wonderful product!

⭐ This is a great resource to use when conducting an in-depth study of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s I have a Dream Speech.

⭐ My students enjoyed using this product.  It was a fun way to review the standards.
