What educators are saying

My students wanted to study energy and we decided to create our own water wheel to create energy. My kids all worked in groups and not one of the water wheels looked the same.

Description

These are instructions for an in class or group workshop exercise to build a waterwheel. A waterwheel converts the potential energy of the water stored in the container to mechanical energy. The mechanical energy can be used to drive an electric generator (generate electricity) or for other mechanical purposes.

This exercises uses materials such as a 3-liter soda bottle, straws, and plastic lids. The cost of this exercise is low and can be completed in about an hour or 2. It is ideal for elementary and middle school aged classes and is a great demonstration of potential energy conversion. However, you may even find it useful for some high-school aged students.
