Learning Objective
Students will learn about four different communities environmental issues and the science ideas being used to address them.
Description
Communities are using scientific ideas to address environmental issues and protect resources! Students will read informational text about the way three different communities are using scientific ideas to manage their environmental problems. Students will obtain and evaluate information through the three articles they read. This unit begins and ends with the use of phenomena. Great for Science Reading Comprehension! Great for Environmental Science and Earth Day!
Students will evaluate design solutions for protecting Earth's resources. They will look at four communities and how they address environmental concerns using design thinking.
This resource includes:
- using phenomena
- five pages of informational text on different design solutions being used to address environmental issues.
- comprehension questions
- vocabulary pages
- multiple-choice quiz.

Elena ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied
My students enjoyed reading about pocket-prairies and opening the flood plains. We all learned new things. This standard is tricky so I appreciate the author really making an effort to have students look at different communities and the science ideas they are using for environmental issues. It really aligns well with the standard.
This resource is aligned with the NGSS 5th-grade standard
NGSS 5-ESS3-1.
Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
and
Utah SEEd 5th grade
This resource is designed to meet the Utah SEEd standard: 5.3.4
Evaluate design solutions whose primary function is to conserve Earth’s environments and resources. Define the problem, identify criteria and constraints, analyze available data on proposed solutions, and determine an optimal solution.
They will read about:
- California’s extended drought and what science ideas and strategies are being implemented to address future water shortages.
- Midwest flooding and levee breaking and the solutions proposed to protect against future river overflow.
- Texas coastal flooding due to hurricanes and the new idea of creating prairie pockets to absorb runoff, filter rainwater, and attract native pollinators to the area.
- Utah uses a variety of strategies to prevent erosion.
After each article, students will answer comprehension questions related to the reading passage and will define vocabulary.
At the end of the unit, students will take a quiz in the format of the end of the year testing.
