What educators are saying

Good work produced by my group on this project and they really enjoyed the freedom to investigate a disorder of their choosing
I was sick and had my substitute do this with the class. Sub said the kids worked quietly and had minimal questions for him.... the project was so easy for the students to follow. Thanks

Description

This project is a nice compliment/add on to a genetics unit. In the project students will select a human genetic condition to study from the following provided list:

- Cystic fibrosis, colorblindness, hemophilia, Prader-Willi syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, cri du chat, Down’s syndrome, albinism, sickle cell anemia, and Turner’s syndrome

Students are then given a detailed list of information to find on their condition and are asked to present their findings using words and diagrams in either a poster or digital format. An easy to use teacher marking scale/rubric is provided.

Students will work independently and in my experience the project takes 2 or 3 class periods to complete. This is an excellent, easy to use project resource for classroom teachers. Also, the simplicity with which it is worded and presented also makes it an ideal resource for distance learning situations and for substitute teachers who may not have a strong science background.
