Description

This 50 minute lesson to teaches students how to analyze literature using an excerpt from The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
The students read the summary of the story and then read the passage. Then, they meet with a partner to focus on a few specific phrases from the excerpt. Students work on a chart looking at the characteristics and connotations of the author's word choices, and how that relates to the story, plot, and/or characters. Then, the class works together to fill out the chart based on their ideas they came up with while working with their partner.

Lesson includes:
— A Student Copy with a Summary of the story, the Excerpt, and Chart.
— A Teacher Copy with the chart filled out with examples and ideas, as well as the Lesson Directions, the Summary and Excerpt.
— PowerPoint Slide with the Chart for the Active Board to complete the chart as a class, after a short partner work activity or Think Pair Share.
