How Many More? How Many Less? Comparing Numbers

This game will help students to answer those tricky How Many More? and How Many Less? questions.
For example: There are 3 apples and 7 bananas. How many more bananas than apples are there?
Each question card says “How many more?” or “How many less?” Students identify the larger or smaller number (depending on the question type) and answer how many more or how many less it is from the other number. The answers are printed in a small font on the picture of each card so that students can self-check.
The game is played as follows:

Start with 10-15 markers. Draw a card and find the answer. Place one of your markers on the space on the game board whose picture matches your card. If another player has only 1 marker there, you can “bump” him/her off of the space. When you get 2 markers on a space, it is “locked” and you cannot be bumped from it.

This game provides three levels depending on the amount of scaffolding your students need.

The first level uses the dice cards and includes only numbers 1-5 with the dice as a visual. Students tell how many more or how many less dots are on one dice from the other.

The second level uses the domino cards and numbers 1-9 with the dot visuals. Students tell how many more or how many less dots are on one side of the domino from the other.

The third level does not use visuals but includes just two numbers. Students tell how many more or how many less one number is from the other.

You many choose to play with just one type of card at a time or to mix the card types together into one deck.

These cards can also be used as flashcards or task cards!
