- PDF
Description
Does your class have students with many unique and cultural names? Looking to be more culturally-responsive? Looking for an easy way to differentiate for a class with a wide range of language and writing abilities? Try this week-long My Name Vignette project based on the chapter "My Name" from Sandra Cisneros' famous memoir House on Mango Street. The project is print-and-go-ready. No additional prep is required.
Day 1: Students will complete a pre-reading Anticipation Guide and small group discussion reflecting on the themes and ideas in the "My Name" chapter. Students will then read aloud Cisneros' original vignette and perform a close reading while annotating.
Day 2: Students will complete a brainstorming worksheet based on what they know about the background of their name and their research about its origins.
Day 3: Teacher will introduce the project directions, a suggested writing outline, and a student exemplar. Students will begin projects.
Days 4 - 5: Students will write and revise their vignette projects.
