Description

This complete NO PREP, READY TO USE lesson plan is a fun activity for students as they review or work through a unit on homeostasis and adaptations. Adaptations are taught in several grade levels and connect easily with homeostasis because those adaptations help the organism maintain homeostasis. This activity can be adapted to various grade levels when students are studying animal and plant adaptations, life functions, and body plans.

It includes the following:

  • one page reading on homeostasis and adaptations
  • set of 12 pictures (included as PowerPoint, full-page pdf, half-page pdf) of 2 different organisms of differing difficulting that showcase typical adaptations
  • a chart to complete with the pictures outlining the features and how they help that organism survive
  • summary questions
  • suggestions for use and modifications.

Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis. Examples of investigations could include heart rate response to exercise, stomate response to moisture and temperature, and root development in response to water levels. Assessment does not include the cellular processes involved in the feedback mechanism.
