What educators are saying

This was a great set of readings for a jigsaw activity. I split up the longest reading to use in groups of four, and then added in questions to be completed on a large group paper for them to compare their readings.

Description

In this student-centered, engaging activity, your secondary students will be able to understand the impact of Mexican Immigration in the United States from the turn of the century until 2000. Both Print & Digital (Google drive) versions are included!

This activity follows the GRR (Gradual Release of Responsibility) model. First, the entire class, together, will read about immigration from 1900-1941 and complete the corresponding graphic organizer describing the “push” and “pull” factors that persuaded many Mexicans to want to leave Mexico and immigrate to the United States. Next, students will then work in pairs and complete the second reading and graphic organizer that discusses the time period from 1942-1965, especially the Bracero Program. They will then complete the last graphic organizer individually reading about the time period 1966-1999.

The presentation includes chart analysis, song analysis, “Deporte’” and wrap-up questions. As a “ticket-out-the-door” students are to write a double-chunk paragraph to show their comprehension. A paragraph frame is included to help struggling writers.

This purchase includes the following:

  • 26-slide PowerPoint presentation (Google Slides included)
  • 9-page readings: Mexican Immigration
  • 2-page CHART: “Push” and “Pull” graphic organizers (print & digital)
  • 2-page paragraph frame and prompt (print & digital)

*This product includes both a print and digital version compatible with Google Classroom. Both teacher and student directions are included. Simply share the resources with your students via Google or Google Classroom. Students will be able to type directly into the document.*
