Description

Cinco de Mayo history lessons about the Battle of Puebla take on a new twist with this ELA scavenger hunt / escape room. Your students will be so engaged in searching for clues they won't even realize they're doing serious learning about history. Who knew students could have so much fun with reading and English Language Arts?

The Cinco de Mayo scavenger hunt has a special mission for the students to find the clue words to lead them to the secret strength of the Mexican people. The strength is RESILIENCE.

Students begin with a leveled reading comprehension passage and two questions. The challenge is to find the code word for each answer.

Once students have found all the answers, they must unscramble the letters to find the mystery word. The mystery word tells them where they can find their present.

The reading passages are all original, written by a teacher (me) about the events that led up to the Battle of Puebla. They're at a reading level for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.

It also describes the mistaken belief of many people that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day. It's not, and the reading passage explains why.

Level up the learning and reading engagement of your students with this Cinco de Mayo ELA / Scavenger Hunt Escape room. Gamify your teaching and watch how much faster your students learn!

  • Are you hoping it's a NO-PREP resource? Just print the student pages, share the mission, and you're set!
  • Are you hoping it's rigorous and meets standards in reading? It meets reading standards for informative text listed below and inside the resource. There are comprehension questions that require students to look back in the text. They'll be fully engaged to find the answers they need to solve the quest! Plus, they'll be learning social studies and resilience at the same time.
  • It also includes a word search puzzle.

  • Are you wondering if you can pull off an escape room or scavenger hunt in your class? No worries! I've included lesson plan instructions and a teacher guide. There are:
  • No envelopes
  • No hiding things around the room
  • No extra work for you.
  • It's as easy as printing out the student pages and letting them work on the challenges.

This practically NO-PREP resource is in printable PDF format. All your students need are pencils, and perhaps an eraser. You can use this year after year.
