Meet your students at their skill level, whether you are working in a small group, whole class, intervention, or one-on-one tutoring setting. Start by using the 63 done-for-you word lists to pre-assess your students’ spelling skills. Use these results to choose a just-right starting point for students within the phonics sequence. Introduce new words and review words previously taught with 100% editable Google Slides™ for each word, mapped by phoneme-grapheme correspondence with all heart parts marked. Foster student independence with student tracking sheets as they learn, practice, and master lists of 10 words each.

Emerging readers will love the built-in explicit instruction around spelling patterns. The visual cues on each slide promote the practice of orthographic mapping of words in your students’ brains. This speeds up the process of permanently storing words so they stick! Using traditional word lists–composed of random, unrelated words–that students are expected to memorize could take up to 500 repetitions per word in order to permanently store it in a student’s memory. The Science of Reading research shows that our brains learn words much more successfully when (1) we match sounds to symbols (phonemes to letters/graphemes) and (2) words are categorized and connected to spelling patterns we recognize. Using this approach, most students will master a word with 5 or fewer repetitions.
