What educators are saying

I really liked this resource. It helps my students when they are just starting to do orthographic mapping with the words because they know which parts say what they are supposed to say. I love using this!
This was a great resource to teach SOR aligned sight words. I used it in addition to another resource with activities to correspond to the words. These were my teaching slides and the other resource were my practice slides.

Description

Are your students struggling to memorize lists of sight words? Connect their high frequency word learning to their phonics knowledge with HFW lists organized by phonics pattern. Encourage decoding and orthographic mapping skills with sight word slides that include visual phonics cues. Explicitly teach irregular word parts using the heart word method.

This resource includes 630 of the most common “sight words” from the Dolch and Fry word lists, perfect for students mastering Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade reading standards. No prep slides and pre-sorted word lists allow you to print, present, and teach. Save your time and peace of mind knowing that you are following a logical scope and sequence of phonics skills and making the most of your High Frequency Word instructional time.

Meet your students at their skill level, whether you are working in a small group, whole class, intervention, or one-on-one tutoring setting. Start by using the 63 done-for-you word lists to pre-assess your students’ spelling skills. Use these results to choose a just-right starting point for students within the phonics sequence. Introduce new words and review words previously taught with 100% editable Google Slides™ for each word, mapped by phoneme-grapheme correspondence with all heart parts marked. Foster student independence with student tracking sheets as they learn, practice, and master lists of 10 words each.

Here's what’s inside:

  • Links to 4 Editable Google Slides™ presentations for teaching all 630 High Frequency/Heart Words
  • 63 ready-to-print lists (of 10 words each) of the most common High Frequency Words from Dolch + Fry Lists, sorted by phonics patterns
  • Scope and Sequence for the phonics progression followed
  • Heart Words list with explanations of all temporary and permanently irregular “heart parts”
  • Student Mastery Tracking Sheets for each word list

Emerging readers will love the built-in explicit instruction around spelling patterns. The visual cues on each slide promote the practice of orthographic mapping of words in your students’ brains. This speeds up the process of permanently storing words so they stick! Using traditional word lists–composed of random, unrelated words–that students are expected to memorize could take up to 500 repetitions per word in order to permanently store it in a student’s memory. The Science of Reading research shows that our brains learn words much more successfully when (1) we match sounds to symbols (phonemes to letters/graphemes) and (2) words are categorized and connected to spelling patterns we recognize. Using this approach, most students will master a word with 5 or fewer repetitions.
