Description

Hidden Figures: Math Activity (Perfect for Black History Month or after watching the movie in Math Class!)

The activity gives a brief description of the three brilliant African-American women at NASA -- Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.

This is a great activity for your class after watching the movie "Hidden Figures", in celebration of Black History Month, or in celebration of Women's History Month!

Students will evaluate expressions preparing for the next spacecraft mission! Students must evaluate each expression and work as "human computers" to calculate important data for the mission. This is a fun and engaging lesson that allows students to act as "human computers" in math class!

HOW TO USE:

No prep necessary! Simply copy the math activity for each student. Read through the history of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson as a class then discuss the expectations of the activity. Students will then evaluate 8 expressions given various values for each variable. Students must use the Order of Operations (with exponents) to then find the value. Each expression gives 'important data' for the astronaut to complete the next space mission.
