What educators are saying

My students loved writing their own hero's Journey story. I loved how this resource broke down the elements of a hero's journey, step-by-step. My students found the descriptions and Moana example very helpful.
This was a great resource as we worked on writing our own stories to follow the hero archetype in our Language Arts Curriculum. It was well organized and was a great help to the students.

Hero’s Journey Worksheets - Mini Lesson and Outline for Hero’s Journey Archetype

↠ In this Hero’s Journey lesson, students will be introduced to the Hero's Journey archetype and apply it to a familiar narrative text.  This lesson involves no prep: simply print the materials provided and provide them to your students.

↠ You can begin this lesson by distributing the Hero's Journey Informational Handout. This handout introduces the concept of The Hero's Journey and provides two representations of the different "hours" of the journey - a visual graphic, and a detailed table. These representations describe each hour within Joseph Campbell's archetype.

↠ After introducing the structure of the Hero's Journey, you can then apply it to your students' favorite novel, movie, short story, or comic book. This resource provides a Hero's Journey Graphic Organizer that can be used for any text. Students are prompted to fill out each "hour" of the Hero's Journey as it pertains to the narrative text that you explore together as a class.

↠ An example for Disney's Moana has been provided. If your students are familiar with this film, you can explore this example together to model the activity. Alternatively, you can use this example as an answer key and use this film as the narrative for the activity.

Hero’s Journey Project - Hero’s Journey Outline, Graphic Organizer, and Rubric

↠ For this Hero’s Journey project, students will use the Hero's Journey archetype as an outline for their own exciting narrative!  This project involves no prep: simply print the materials provided and assign them to your students.

↠ Start with the Hero’s Journey Assignment Handout that provides instructions for students. They are given the option to choose between developing a slideshow presentation or designing an Instagram profile to communicate their narrative.

↠ You can also distribute the Hero’s Journey Rubric so that students are aware of the assignment expectations.  This 4-level rubric is provided in a ready-to-print format.  Alternatively, you can use the editable rubric to modify and meet the needs of your individual curriculum.

↠ These assignment instructions also include a Hero’s Journey Outline that students can use as a graphic organizer to develop their monomyth.  They can brainstorm each hour of their journey before turning this outline in as a formative assessment.

↠ Students will then write a rough draft of their story using their Hero’s Journey graphic organizer.

↠ After peer-editing, they can apply their monomyth to their medium of choice (slideshow or Instagram profile).

I have diverse learner profiles in my classroom so this activity was great. Challenging and mature enough for my higher students and enough scaffolding and support for those who need the extra aids.
