Henri Matisse Collage Art Project, Roll A Dice Game, Biography, & Exit Tickets

Ready to liven up your elementary art curriculum with a fun roll a dice drawing game? This Henri Matisse art lesson will boost student confidence and creativity. Kids will appreciate his colorful paper cutout collages of leaves, dancing figures, and squiggles. Moreover, they’ll connect with his personal story about “painting with scissors” from bed.

And, it’ll help time-starved teachers like you create lesson plans based on modern artists like Henri Matisse.

During this collage art lesson, your class will learn about Fauvism, an art style with strong colors and brushstrokes. And, they’ll learn why Matisse was given the nickname, “wild beasts.” Students will create an abstract collage with organic shapes using the step-by-step guide and PowerPoint.

I used this with 3rd grade students in making a Matisse collage. They chose the shapes to create out of paper. This was a great resource to give them a visual reference for their collage- I highly recommend it to art teachers wanting to support students in Matisse-inspired lessons.

I like this especially for the students who have trouble thinking of ideas. It also encouraged the students to keep creating shapes to use and then find ways to put them together. A student favorite this year.

I used this with a group of younger students online and the activity worked really well. It provided the necessary structure to guide their ideas and also allowed them the opportunity to develop those fine motor skills and coordination.
