What educators are saying

Teaching kids about friendships is very difficult when social situations do not come easily for them. My students have enjoyed this resource and it has opened up conversations!
My students looooove all of the lessons/presentations by Eve Coates! This lesson gives practical guidance on how to be a good friend, and outlines some unhealthy behaviours to look out for. My students are so engaged, and this lesson promotes good discussion about how to be a good friend.

Overview of PowerPoint:

Kids learn four basic traits of a healthy friendship:

  • Healthy friendships are balanced. Both friends feel equal and neither one is in charge and both friends benefit. Unhealthy friendships are imbalanced. One friend has more control and gets all the benefits from the friendships.
  • Healthy friendships are predictable & stable. Both people know what to expect from each other. Unhealthy relationships are unstable and unpredictable. You’re unsure if they’ll be your friend each day or not!
  • Healthy friendships are accepting. Both people feel comfortable and not judged. Unhealthy friendships are not accepting. You may feel you have to change to get the other person's approval.
  • Healthy friendships have boundaries. Each person stays in control of their own responsibilities & chooses what they are and aren't personally comfortable with. Unhealthy friendships have broken boundaries where it's unclear who is control of what.

Broken boundaries can look like:

  • A friend sharing information about you that you wanted to be private.
  • A friend making choices for you that you wanted to make.
  • A friend pressuring you to do something you aren’t comfortable with.
  • A friend giving you their responsibilities.

-Kids learn that while having some problems is normal, some friendships are too unhealthy and you may need to take a break.

-It ends with kids challenging themselves to choose one way to be a better friend.

I hope your students enjoy!

Thanks,

Eve
