Description

Teachers, the more I see this film, the more I really, really like it and find it extremely undervalued. With the total absence of any objectionable content whatsoever you should not hesitate at all in showing this to your classes. You could even stream it for free as I did on Vudu. Just download this packet and you will have all you need for a very rich and nourishing (pun intended) unit on la cuisine française.

Students will immediately identify with the awkward situation in which Hortense finds herself: alienated as the only female working in the Palais Elysée. Who hasn't felt at one time or another like he or she was the only one of a certain type: the only one who couldn't speak the language or was of a different skin color or ethnic background, etc.

The issues of gender roles and inequality spotlighted in this film and the manner in which it does this really give pause for thought. Your students will grow from the discussion and with the omnipresence of food, the film will integrate into your curriculum quite nicely just about anytime of the year.

This packet includes eight Anticipation Guide questions to get students thinking about issues that will be presented in the film, a whopping 41 plot comprehension questions written in simple French that even level one students will be able to decode the vast majority of time, an answer key for these questions, and seven student choice activities for after-viewing like essay prompts and real-world project descriptions. Please take a look at my preview file for an accurate idea of this packet.
