Harlem Renaissance Biographical Speech & Class Quilt

This is a short research and presentation activity able to be completed within a week. The “Who Am I” game is meant as an anticipatory set, where students will hopefully connect with an author before diving into their research. I encourage them to find a book or article in addition to search engines (my sources are listed on the “Who Am I game). When doing my research, I noted different sources contained very different information, so multiple sources are an excellent idea to get a more complete picture.
 
Presentations should be a few minutes long—if they choose to use music in the background, remind them to speak loudly. Quilt squares can be attached using duct tape (use front and back, so it holds); you can also create a border around the perimeter. You might want to wait until all squares are completed before purchasing; there are tons of color and pattern options. [Craft stores often offer 40% coupons; they carry duct tape and scrapbook paper.] Display the quilt in your classroom or in the school office; they’re gorgeous!
 
Students can take notes during presentations, but that could also take away from the visual and overall impact of the speeches. Another option is to have them jot notes in between presentations, or to write about their favorite/most interesting details afterward.
 
Several of the authors were homosexual, so be aware that sensitive discussions may arise. Listening and respectful discussion are key. Many of the authors faced a very challenging upbringing, and persevered in spite of the racism and broken families that could have discouraged them. The point of this activity is to celebrate their accomplishments; you can always bring the focus back to that. Enjoy!
