Description

Happy New Year Activities | 3 Resources to Learn the History of New Year Holiday

In this highly-engaging Happy New Year lesson, students complete three hands-on activities to learn about the history and origins of the New Year's Holiday!

Students complete a guided reading assignment with "check-in's" to make sure they are understanding the content. In this first activity, students are introduced to the first new year celebrations with the Babylonians, the introduction of a Roman 10-month calendar, the establishment of the Julian calendar by Julius Caesar and January 1st as the first day of the year, and the tweaks made by Pope Gregory XIII and the Gregorian calendar.

Then, students investigate a "New Year Celebrations Around the World" handout to familiarize themselves further with this holiday! Students are introduced to new year's traditions around the world - including traditions in Chile, Japan, Scotland, and, among many others, the Philippines!.

Students then take their knowledge and put it on display by completing a "News Cast" assignment where they, in the shoes of journalists, compile a report that explains the origins of this day and how it is celebrated around the world! A close-reading crossword puzzle activity is also included to engage all students at any part in this activity!

Enjoy!

This Happy New Year Holiday lesson is also included in the larger Winter Holiday Bundle, which includes lessons on Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the New Year celebrations!

The Winter Holiday Bundle is located here!
