Description

Halloween Fractions Escape Room Activity Breakout is an exciting and engaging way to review fraction concepts with your students! Students will visit stations and complete puzzles and challenges related to adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, reducing, comparing, and matching equivalent fractions. This highly engaging Halloween fractions escape room will not only be the perfect review for your fractions unit, but it will also help your students improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Halloween Fractions Escape Room Background Story:

While checking out an old abandoned house you and your friends get trapped inside! Upon inspection, you notice various fraction-related materials lying around the room and an old dusty computer waiting for a code to help you escape. Can you and your friends use your fraction skills to decode the puzzles and discover the secret code vital to your escape?

How The Halloween Fractions Escape Room Activity Works:

Students work in small groups and move about the classroom to five different stations to complete puzzles and activities related to fractions:

  1. X Marks the Spot: Students practice adding fractions with this fun puzzle where they place fractions on a tic-tac-toe style board to form lines that add up to 1.
  2. Chain Reaction: Students match pairs of equivalent fractions along a chain to form a secret message.
  3. Pyramid Puzzle: Students find missing fractions to solve multiplication equations and complete a pyramid-style puzzle.
  4. The Mysterious Flower: Students organize fractions from least to greatest on a flower's petal following patterns seen on other "fraction flowers"
  5. Peculiar Puzzle Chair: This fractions activity will have students unscramble puzzle pieces to reveal a secret math equation they must complete using the order of operations.

Once the students finish each fractions activity, they check their work on a computer to see if they "escape the haunted house" (only one computer is required for the class). The computer component is not vital to the activity; however, it does add an extra bit of excitement for students when completing the escape room activities!

Note: The computer must be able to access Microsoft Excel and be able to display macros (program is not compatible with iPads or tablets).

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (𝘢/𝘣 = 𝘢 ÷ 𝘣). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. For example, interpret 3/4 as the result of dividing 3 by 4, noting that 3/4 multiplied by 4 equals 3, and that when 3 wholes are shared equally among 4 people each person has a share of size 3/4. If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Interpret the product (𝘢/𝘣) × 𝘲 as a parts of a partition of 𝘲 into 𝘣 equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations 𝘢 × 𝘲 ÷ 𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) × 4 = 8/3, and create a story context for this equation. Do the same with (2/3) × (4/5) = 8/15. (In general, (𝘢/𝘣) × (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘤/𝘣𝘥.)
