Integrate Poetry and Art! This writing activity works for any season - fall, winter, spring, or summer - or any holiday, especially Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Mother's Day! Students write and illustrate Haiku poetry depicting seasonal images in this integrated activity in which the two disciplines -- art and writing -- complement and support each other.
The lesson is divided into five distinct sessions which can be completed in one day with time left over, or can be scheduled over a series of days, with one or more sessions being completed each day. Since it relies on student writing level and creativity, the lesson can be easily differentiated for several grade levels.
Activities in this lesson include:
- use observation skills and prior knowledge to create a word list
- listen to read-aloud samples of Haiku poems
- use syllabication and grammar skills
- use descriptive words to create visual images
- collaborate on a group-written Haiku
- independently write a seasonal Haiku
- use handwriting skills to create a finished copy
- mount and illustrate their Haiku
- use collage technique to create an illustration
- use a rubric for self-assessment
- discuss and analyze their own and other’s work
- use a rubric for self-assessment

Along with writing and basic art supplies, a book of Haiku poems will be needed for reading aloud. Suggested titles are included with the lesson.
This art lesson is designed to teach art appreciation, artist behavior, and art analysis, and to foster authentic art-making and art education.

I am a retired elementary classroom teacher, a former art teacher, an artist and a writer. I have worked with all elementary grades, and with special groups including ELL, GATE, and At-Risk students. Consideration is given to developmental appropriateness, differentiation possibilities, and teacher individuality. For this reason, directions are general, expectations are open-ended, and clip art on student pages is kept to a minimum.
